What to check before buying

• Ear openings. A hat without correctly placed ear holes will not stay on an upright-eared dog, and it is uncomfortable for a floppy-eared one.
• Chin strap adjustability. The strap should be snug enough to hold and loose enough to slip two fingers under. This is the difference between a hat that stays and one that spins.
• Weight and brim. A stiff oversized brim blocks vision and dogs remove it immediately. Soft, shallow brims work far better.
