A winter jacket is a different garment from a sweater. It has to stop wind, shed water and hold heat while the dog is moving, which means an outer shell that resists weather and insulation underneath that keeps working when the outside is wet. Getting the size right

Chest girth decides fit, not weight and not breed. Measure the widest point of the ribcage just behind the front legs, keeping two fingers under the tape, then measure back length from the neck base to the tail base. Compare both against the chart on the individual product page, because a knit sweater and a padded jacket are cut differently. Between two sizes, size up.

Choosing by weather, not by look

• Cold and dry: a padded or puffer jacket. Insulation matters more than the shell.
• Cold and wet: a waterproof outer with a lining. A soaked jacket is worse than none, because water pulls heat out faster than air.
• Wet but mild: a light waterproof shell on its own, so the dog does not overheat.
• Deep cold, short-coated dog: full belly coverage. Most heat is lost from the underside, which is where cheap jackets leave a gap.

What separates a jacket that lasts

Look for coverage that reaches the tail base rather than stopping mid-back, a collar that does not gap at the neck, leg straps or a belly panel that stop the jacket riding up, and a harness opening positioned so you are not removing the coat to clip a lead. Reflective detail matters more in winter than any other season, because most walks happen in the dark.
