Yorkshire Terriers are tiny and fine-boned with a long silky coat. The fit problem is different from other small breeds: too tight and the coat mats where the fabric rubs, especially at the armpits and behind the collar.

Fitting a Yorkie

Size on chest girth, and choose smooth-lined fabric over rough knit if your Yorkie has a full coat. Check the armpit seams, since that is where matting starts. Brush before and after wearing anything for a long stretch. Compare both measurements against the size chart on the individual product page, and size up if the dog falls between two.

Coat care and clothing

A Yorkie in a long coat needs clothing that does not grip. Slippery linings, wider armholes and shorter wear windows all reduce matting. For dogs kept in a puppy cut the problem largely disappears, but then the dog is less insulated and actually needs the sweater more.
