Choosing a length

Clip and handle

The clip should be proportionate: a heavy chain clip drags on a small dog's neck, while a light clip on a large dog is the part that fails. Padded handles matter for any dog that pulls, and a second traffic handle near the clip gives close control without shortening your grip.

Chain leads

Chain leads exist mainly to stop dogs that chew through webbing. They are heavier, so match the weight to the dog rather than the look, and check that the swivel turns freely so the lead does not twist.
