Frenchies are built wide. Broad chest, thick neck, short back and stocky shoulders, which means clothing cut for a generic small dog is too narrow at the chest and too long in the body. Everything here allows for the barrel chest and the shorter back.

Fitting a French Bulldog

Chest girth is the number that matters and it is usually larger than the weight suggests. Measure the widest point behind the front legs, and check the neck opening separately because a Frenchie neck is often as thick as the head. Compare both measurements against the size chart on the individual product page, and size up if the dog falls between two.

Heat and breathing come first

French Bulldogs are brachycephalic and overheat faster than almost any other breed. Skip heavy layers indoors and in warm weather, avoid anything tight around the throat, and choose breathable fabric over thick padding unless it is genuinely cold. In water they also sink rather than float, which is why we build a life jacket with a chin float specifically for the breed.
